PAINT WASTEWATER TREATMENT WITH CONSTRUCTED WETLAND
Abstract - The materials used in paints manufacture vary widely, but in general
paint consists of solids and liquid. Based on the paint process, paints
industries can be divided into two: Water Based and Solvent Based. In Indonesia
there are about 65 paint manufacturers on large-scale to medium and 100
small-scale factories. Where most industrial paint products to meet the needs
of the domestic market. The greatest need is approximately 70% water based
paints and 30% solvent based paints. Although paint industry needed, but the
chemicals in paint can have a negative impact and cause health problems. The
paint industry comes from chemicals materials and must waste that can pollute
the environment. So that the paint industry waste disposed into the environment
must meet the standards regulation to discharge in environmental, it is
necessary to study the paint industry wastewater treatment technology by taking
into account the required chemicals and dimensions of units and waste treatment
systems. The information from this study is expected to be the basis for
industrial waste treatment efforts. This study is done in 2013 last semester.
This study is plan form and dimension calculation processing system to a waste
treatment unit is needed, based on the literature on paint industrial waste.
Dimensional requirement for wastewater treatment to precipitate the heavy
metals Pb, Cd and Cr requires filler coagulant units, units of coagulation,
flocculation units, and units of sedimentation. Technology advanced wastewater
treatment for industrial paints, can be done chemically by
precipitation-coagulation, physics with sedimentation and the biology by
constructed wetland. The constructed wetland using plants that have the ability
to accumulate inorganic waste (heavy metals) high and able to adapt in a high
organic content as well. Where as bioindicator wastewater quality, made with
fish pond, before the effluent discharged into the environment (water / river).
