Garden Seed Conservation through Research and Management
Abstract - The old botanic garden is
very important for the advancement of science and culture. In Indonesia, the
botanic garden is an ex-situ plants conservation. Purwodadi Botanic Garden plays its role on conservation, research,
education and ecotourism. The main characteristics of a botanic garden is the
plants collection and documentation with the support collection such as seed
collection and herbarium. The seed collection are responsible for handling the
management of garden seed materials. Materials from the seed collection have
specific characteristics and unique. The seeds stored in seed museum and seed
bank. The seed museum contains a collection of seeds are preserved for
exhibition purposes as well as for identification of seed diversity, while the
seed bank functions as a support for ex-situ conservation as complementary,
supplementary and active collection. Along with the development of technology, the seed collection is not
on manual systems, but also computerized, for more systematic and regular.
Therefore it can improve the seed management and reliable information as the
basis for the seed conservation. In this paper the seed conservation in
Purwodadi Botanic Garden through technical
management to basic research will be discussed.
